TAS Mag set out 2014
I like the set out of the 2011 M1 page because it has a good mix of pictures and stories/ captions. Simple always works.
On our page I would like to see all of the things that we did in 2014 for example a story about a highlight that happened every term and a photo. I think that we should try make our page the best page in the book.

M1 Trip to Oamaru
The point o this trip is to learn about THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS.
Our trip to Oamaru was so much fun!
Here's what happened-
First we went to Matsingers Berry Farm
M1 was let loose in the strawberry field to pick and eat as many strawberries as we liked.
I felt very privileged. Next we got to see the packing room and Miss McLennan bought some strawberries for
the class, [they were really cheap].
We then went to Whitestone Cheese Factory.
We got to look through glass windows to see the cheese- making process. I liked the look of the blue cheese.
Then a lady came in to answer any questions we had and after she took us into the main shop and we got to sample some cheeses.
There were 3 samples and I think they were, Brie, Creamy Cheddar and my favorite, Blue Cheese!
The taste was creamy and strong. I really enjoyed it.
Miss then took us to Subway to eat lunch and when we walked in one of the guys who worked there was from Twizel!
He then said, " If you are in a uniform you get a free drink or cookie!" Every-one was surprised. It was a good lunch.
It was a quick stop to the Warehouse to get a new phone for Miss McLennan!
Finally the thing we had been waiting for all day, STEAMPUNK!
It was so awesome, and what I liked about it was there was something different around every corner.
The Infinity Portal was my favourite and the sound effects just made it all amazing!
Jaimee is having a great time!
As a treat we got to go to the Lolly Factory. I got sour lollies that made my mouth water. We then had to go home back to Twizel.
Thank-you Miss McLennan for the wonderful trip to Oamaru for the day I really enjoyed myself!

My Report for this years goals
I think I have succeeded nearly all of my goals. The goal I have achieved and have improved on is being more independent in class, for example, if I am given a task I tried doing it by myself and then if still can't figure it out I then asked someone. To achieve that I tried to be more independent in and out school.
I have also extended my general knowledge in my learning for example if someone asked me what a transistor was when I was doing science or if they asked me what people like to eat in Scotland while I was doing social studies I would not have the slightest clue of what they were talking about but the amazing thing is now I do!
My maths goals were difficult to achieve because I needed to practice more and I wanted to do more in class. But I think that mathletics, studyladder and e-ako maths have really improved my understanding of things. My next step is to learn new strategies and ways of getting the answer.
I have helped achieve my goals by practicing whenever I can and having a positive attitude to learning. I also set goals that I knew were achievable and that were hard but easy. I have used my goals in everyday stuff like being at the supermarket what things I could buy and how much money I would have afterwards.
Overall I think I reached Solo Relational with my goals for my goal setting. I think I will go into year 8 with a better mind frame and attitude to learning and school itself. I think that these goals will be very useful in the future.

Producers & Consumers
For social studies we are learning about the rights and responsibilities of producers and consumers. Here is an example
Tailing
In the weekend we were tailing at Totara Peak Station. It was very fun.
My job was when the came off the rotation thing they fell into a box and I sprayed their backs with a drench called Clik.

Electronics Review
First we were introduced to our mentors and we went to a table in groups of four. We then opened our kits and looked through the booklet. At first I was kind of confused but Jaimee helped me understand.
We were making a Christmas tree that lit up and made music. the tree was the circuit board and we had to add the speakers, transistors and other gadgets on. To add things on we had to solder them to the tree and different things had to go in certain places. The soldering was hard at first because my hands were shaking uncontrollably. Our groups mentor, Steven, said that my soldering was very good.
Jaimee was amazing at it and she understood nearly everything that Steven said. We had a booklet full of instructions that we had to do and how to read transistors and get the colour coding right.
Overall I think I really enjoyed the day but I don't think it is what I want to do in the future, I still really enjoyed the experience. I can't wait until we get to programme them. Thank-you to everyone who organised the day.
=
Bake Sale review
Yay! We finished the bake sale. I was really proud of my blueberry muffins.
I also liked the ricebubble slice. The lemonade was a little bit bitter and could have been sweeter.
If we did it again I think that it should just be the bake sale group selling the things because because we had a plan ready and it got a bit muddled.
Overall I hope we raised the right amount of money.

Mounted Games 2013
The mounted games are about games for adrenaline junkies and their fast and speedy ponies. They do all sorts of obstacles. I am really interested how they jump on their ponies for I know how hard it is. New Zealand has a team and I think that they would be really successful because New Zealand has the right terrain to train on. One day I would like to have a go at this.

Maths
In maths this week we learnt about LCM [lowest common multiple] and HCM [highest common multiple]. We also learnt about factors.
I understood it when we did a sheet as a class. I found it helpful because I could ask questions.
I think we should do it more often.
Science
In science we have started a topic on space. It is very fun.
We have been going on different websites to look at how the solar system works.
Here is a diagram of our solar system
==
At the moment we are focusing on respect. At home I show respect by doing my bit around the farm and the house.
A person who shows real respect will want nothing in return all they need is to know that they have just made someone else happy.
Poetry
M1 are about to start a topic about poetry. We are going to be bring in a poem of our chose.
I hope we get to write a poem.
When we were in Room 4 we had a poem night. It was very successful!
Last Week of School!!!
Yay! It is the last week of Term 3. But there is only 4 days because we had Monday
On Wednesday we have Room 9 coming in so we can read our Scottish stories to them. We will also give them an afternoon tea.
Thursday we have our class party and we will play our Scottish board games that we made for homework and everyone is bringing in a Scottish dish. It is going to be fun!
I am bringing a surprise!!
Today I brought my cake in instead of tomorrow. I shared it with Room 9. We also had some other Scottish food. Everyoneloved my cake.Room 9 wore Scottish vests and clothes. For painting Room 9's faces for their play they gave us pictures of a Scottish man in Scottish clothes playing the bagpipes.Amelia told me that she really liked my cake. It was really cute.Overall I thought it was a successful afternoon. Term 3

Science
In Science we are making bridges.
Jaimee and I designed one called Clyde Arc. We made this because we are learning
about Scotland and this bridge is in Glasgow.
At first I thought it would be hard to make because it looks like an abstract bridge.
We used a thin piece of wood for the road part,
A black irrigation pipe for the arc,
and copper wire for the cables.
It turned out good but the wire was a bit loose. Overall I am very proud of what we created.
In class for our Scotland topic we are learning about haggis.
Here are some cool Scottish castles I found.
Things I already know about Scotland
Scotland cloned the first animal, Dolly the sheep.
They invented the telephone and the television.

Aoraki Maths
When we got to the Timaru Boys Hall my heart was racing and my body was frozen with fear.
My first thought that came to mind was to turn around and wait in the van but I stayed strong.
I was the runner so that meant I was going to have to be super fast.
Finally the countdown started. I ran as fast as I could up to the markers table and got our teams first question.
After 20 minutes of working as a team and answering and passing questions the speaker spoke through the mike and said, " 10 minutes to go!" We all started to panic, we were falling behind quickly, so we stopped for a couple of seconds and had a team talk, and we talked about staying as a team, so we gave each other a high five and kept to it again.
The final 10 seconds were such a rush. There were parents, teachers and team mates yelling and screaming, it was such a buzz.
I the end we came 7th last, but we all had a great night and I don't think we will ever forget this. Upcoming Events

For DEAR this week I am reading Crossing. The author is Catherine Norton.
Here is the blurb
Cara has grown up in the shadow of the Wall, In a closed world of food shortages and high security. Her parents are dedicated to their secret work for National Security, and it's only a matter of time before her gifted younger sister follows in their footsteps. It's all Cara has ever known- until the summer she meets Ava and Leon. Ava doesn't care about rules.
Nothing will ever be the same.
I am really enjoying this book. It has got me hooked.
Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014, went out with a bang! With Kylie Minogue, Deacon Blue, and Lulu performing on the stage. The crowd loved it.
I watched part of the performance at the end. I also think New Zealand did very well especially in the cycling.
A shape-shifting horse like water spirit said to haunt the rivers and streams of Scotland. Kelpies are said to have backward hooves and could change between horse and water. The Kelpie was also known to lure humans, especially children into the water to kill and eat them. It usually does this by encouraging children to ride on its back, where its skin becomes sticky - almost adhesive - and it then drags them to the bottom of the water to devour leaving only the heart or liver. The Loch Ness Monster Nessie, also known as the Loch Ness Monster, lives in Scotland. There have been many sightings of it. With quite a few hoaxes, there become disbelievers. But with scientific evidence (see picture below), it's now wonder it's the world's most famous monster. Because of Nessie, Scotland has had many visitors. With the economy going up, the goveronment made it illegal to kill Nessie. But with many tourists, there come lake polution, and the few Nessies alive may die.

LIKE A REAL YEAR 7!!!! ASB GetWise is a fun and educational financial literacy programme run in New Zealand schools, to give young New Zealanders some of the money skills and know-how they need later in life.
Get Wise Talk
Michelle from Get Wise came to give us some information about money skills and about what is wisest to do when we are older.
Here are some things we did:
-Talked about how much money we might earn when we are older.
- Talked to us about what credit cards a safer to use.
- We also went to....................... Hawaii!!!!
We learnt much more, I think it gave us a good understanding on what our future might bring.

HOLIDAYS!!!!
Yay it is the holidays.
To day Miss McLennan gave us the newest lollies out, The sour patch. there were two kinds The Kids, and the soda pops or something. We then got to eat them and then we wrote a story about what it tasted like.
They were delicious my favorite flavor was crisp apple.
They are sour at first then they go gooey and sweet. This was the coolest type of schoolwork.
I liked my last story the best and Miss McLennan said that my story was at Solo Extended Abstract. YAY!
We also did a performance of the Creation of Aoraki.
I was stagehand because of my leg. It was so cool.
We then had end of term assembly and I played the guitar for the national anthem.
I got a striving award for: Art, Food Tech and maths.
I also got a certificate for helping Miss McLennan cook for the early years program.
Overall I think I did very well.
Thanks to all the teachers who taught me this term. See you in term 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WEEK 11 Arts in Action Week
Ellen Swanson Last week Jed and Hera came to Twizel Area School. They are musicians from Christchurch. They sang some of their original songs for us and spoke to us about being a stage performer. Jed told us it is fine to be really nervous before you perform.
Jed plays the drums, piano, guitar and some other instruments as well as being a very good singer especially when he harmonizes. Hera plays the guitar, writes her own songs and has an amazing singing voice. She has been singing since she was 15years old and is from Iceland. Students had workshops with them over two days.
This week I was in the guitar playing workshop with Mrs Aldridge. She is a music teacher at Bluestone School and was amazing at teaching us all how to be confident when playing music. The whole school did a concert on Tuesday in the Theatre. I was nervous about it but excited, and felt very proud of playing in front of the audience. WE LOVE ARTS IN ACTION WEEK!
This year for art's n action week It is all about music. We have two artists who have come called Hera and Jed.Jed plays the drums and the guitar and sometimes plays the piano. Hera plays the guitar and sings. She is from Iceland and lives in Christchurch.Hera has been playing since 15. She is an amazing singer and so is Jed.Hera has some cool music videos, my favorite ones are called Issues and Secret Garden. Here they are now. Issues

Here is a story that I wrote and I'm really proud of it.
An Unexpected Turn
It was an extraordinary day, the sun was shining brightly and the birds tweeted joyously.
I decided to go for a stroll in the forest and look for poofin berries. I said good-bye to Mum and set off into the forest.
The forest was peaceful and quiet. All of a sudden I jolted to a halt. Right in front of me were the most biggest and plumpest poofin berries I had ever seen.
I walked towards the poofin bush and picked a handful and stuffed them into my basket, and when I went to pick another handful the ground beneath me falls, I close my eyes and hope that there will be a soft landing at the end of what seemed like a really long tunnel.
When I open my eyes I realise I have stopped falling. I look around to see where I am and if there's a way out. "Who are you!" boomed a voice. I started spluttering. I am surrounded!

Camp Recount Rock Climbing
“Climber ready” “Belayer ready” “climb away”.
I was the captain of my team so I climbed first. In my team there was India, Iain, Jacob and I. I was so nervous, I kept having to tell myself to not look down since I was so scared.
When I got to the top from my climb up the slippery rock face, I felt like Sir Edmund Hillary. Riaane told me what to do to get down I was so scared. “Just lean back as far as you can and keep your legs apart and start climbing down”. My legs felt like jelly and I thought that the belayer below me was going to let go of the rope.
Finally down! I yelled whoopee! And gave myself and great big pat on the back and had a big drink of water.
Next I belayed and it was hard because you had to keep holding on to the rope and keep bringing the rope in at all times.
When everyone else had their last go I wanted another go so I got clipped in and started climbing up and while I was going up I lost my footing and slid down the rockface until I found my footing and kept climbing up again .
We then had a long walk back to Huxley, and when we got back I flopped onto my bed and then I went and said thank-you to Mr Frost, Riaane and Nick.
Overall I had an awesome time and would like to do it again another day. I think the part I learnt the most was getting to trust the people in my group. I think it was a great experience.

[[image:/file/view/solo-poster.jpg/498151900/320x411/solo-poster.jpg width="320" height="411" align="center"]] If you are at prestructural you are at shallow learning, and if you are at extended abstract you are at deep learning. WEEK 6 Dear Zane,Thank-you for coming on camp to help us with our activities that we did on Thursday. The orienteering with the compasses was fun and hard at the same time. I think it would be impossible to do the whole course in 5 minutes.I also liked playing hide and seek with India and Mackenzie. I can't believe Mackenzie didn't see me even though I yelled out her name. The dogs weren't very good at hiding though. Thank-you for coming and helping Kind regards,Ellen

Week 2

==

==Science
In Science we are making bridges.Jaimee and I designed one called Clyde Arc.
3 Adjectives that best describe,

Things I already know about Scotland

My DEAR Book

Mythology Creatures
Kelpie
A shape-shifting horse like water spirit said to haunt the rivers and streams of Scotland. Kelpies are said to have backward hooves and could change between horse and water.
The Kelpie was also known to lure humans, especially children into the water to kill and eat them. It usually does this by encouraging children to ride on its back, where its skin becomes sticky - almost adhesive - and it then drags them to the bottom of the water to devour leaving only the heart or liver.
The Loch Ness Monster
Nessie, also known as the Loch Ness Monster, lives in Scotland.

WEEK 11Arts in Action Week
Ellen Swanson
Last week Jed and Hera came to Twizel Area School.

In my team there was
India, Iain, Jacob and I. I was so nervous, I kept having to tell myself to
not look down since I was so scared.
When I got to the top from my climb up the slippery rock face, I felt like
Sir Edmund Hillary. Riaane told me what to do to get down I was so
scared. “Just lean back as far as you can and keep your legs apart and
start climbing down”. My legs felt like jelly and I thought that the
belayer below me was going to let go of the rope.
Finally down! I yelled whoopee! And gave myself and great big pat on the
back and had a big drink of water.
Next I belayed and it was hard because you had to keep holding on to the
rope and keep bringing the rope in at all times.
When everyone else had their last go I wanted another go so I got clipped
in and started climbing up and while I was going up I lost my footing
and slid down the rockface until I found my footing and kept climbing up
again .
We then had a long walk back to Huxley, and when we got back I flopped
onto my bed and then I went and said thank-you to Mr Frost, Riaane and
Nick.
Overall I had an awesome time and would like to do it again
another day. I think the part I learnt the most was getting to
trust the people in my group. I think it was a great experience.

WEEK 6
Dear Zane,Thank-you for coming on camp to help us with our activities that we did on Thursday.
Thank-you for coming and helping
Kind regards,Ellen
